Addressing widespread inconsistencies in research peptide handling, an international consortium of analytical chemists and pharmaceutical scientists has issued comprehensive guidelines for the reconstitution and storage of lyophilized bioactive peptides.

The guidance emphasizes that peptides are delicate polymeric sequences held together by covalent amide bonds and non-covalent secondary structures (such as alpha-helices and beta-sheets). Mechanical agitation (aggressive shaking), rapid pressurization during reconstitution, or exposure to elevated temperatures can cause irreversible peptide fibrillation, deamidation, and peptide degradation.

The standard recommends gentle trickle reconstitution along the vial glass wall using sterile bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol), followed by mandatory refrigeration between 2°C and 8°C shielded from ultraviolet light exposure.
