What is Semax?

Semax was synthesized by the Institute of Molecular Genetics and the Brain Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. It is an analog of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10) without any hormonal or corticosteroid-inducing endocrine activity. Semax is widely used in Eastern European clinical neurology for acute ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, and cognitive decline.

Biological Mechanism

Upregulates Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and TrkB receptor mRNA expression in the hippocampus, modulates dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission, and downregulates inflammatory gene networks following neural ischemia.

Scientific Studies & Clinical Evidence

Peer-reviewed publications, clinical trials, and preclinical research investigating Semax.

Preclinical2014-04-15

Semax Modulates Expression of Neurotrophins (BDNF, NGF) and Their Receptors in Ischemic Rat Brain

Mechanistic molecular study illustrating how Semax confers neuroprotection during cerebral ischemia by robustly upregulating Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and TrkB signaling.

Primary Result: 3-fold upregulation in hippocampal BDNF mRNA and marked reduction in ischemic infarct volume

Administration Summary

Administered via intranasal spray to facilitate direct transport across the cribriform plate into cerebral spinal fluid.

Reconstitution & Storage Standard

Lyophilized peptides must be reconstituted using sterile bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol) and maintained strictly refrigerated between 2°C - 8°C (36°F - 46°F), shielded from light.
